Digital Media and Education

I used my sound recorder to record my voice and edit by using Adobe Audition which is very advanced audio editing software. I equalized my voice track to make it bit smoother and reduce the unwanted frequencies that pick up from the microphone. The music which has been used in this podcast is under Creative Common licenses and they are free to use. I straightly started the podcast by introducing myself and giving a welcome to the listeners. Then I add my introduction music before I start to talk about the topic. Then while I am talking there are background music to help listeners to focus on the  podcast. I have used several music tracks in this podcast. I use an EDM music track when I am talking about the technology. So, listeners will get a feel about the modern technology while they are hearing the music track without focusing about it. Then I have used and old tape music while I am talking about old education methods to get an old feeling. And I mixed them up using Adobe Audition to get a beautiful one soundtrack.

In this podcast I have talked about how we can use digital and social media platforms to improve our study skills and learning methods. I have talked about learning tips, advantages of using social media, resources that help you to improve your learning skills and the connectivity of old and modern study methods in this podcast. Also, I have mentioned how can we use our mobile device to access to the knowledgeable sources in the internet. Lot of information that I am presenting in this podcast, I get from a book which named ‘Social Networking and Education: Global perspectives’ and I have summarized the details in the podcast with most important parts that related to the topic. Also, I got some ideas by using the social media and I have talked about them in the podcast as my personal experiences.

Recording a podcast in English is little bit hard for me as a international student. Because my first language not English. So, I practiced write a rough script and practiced the pronunciations to make a clear podcast. Also, I asked for help from my friends and used digital platforms to get a clear understand about how to make a speech in formal way. Podcast and speeches are not exactly same, but that research help me lot to get a clear voice track. Before I start the podcast, I listened to some professional podcasts to study how they presenting and what kind of techniques they use in their podcast as a research to my podcast. It helps me to understand about the professional way of doing podcast and the correct way to use the music.

By researching about this topic, I also got more knowledge about the modern digital platforms and how can they use it improve our study skills. The Book that I mentioned above gave me lot of details about social media and how they can be resources to the students for their education purposes. Also, this activity helps me to get an idea on, how to do a podcast and how to make a formal speech by using references to an audience.  I should practice more and should be more careful about the pronunciations of English language when I am doing my next episode of this podcast.

Maintaining relationships through Social Media

We are now living in the digital era. The way we look at the world and the way we make relationships with communities has been more digitized in this era. People already start to maintain their relationships through social media with this evaluation.

I officially started to use social media in 2013 by opening a Facebook account at my home country, Sri Lanka. Since that time, I achieve lot of experiences on social media about maintaining relationships with people through the social media. It started with Facebook but now, I am using different kind of social media platforms for different kind of purposes.

But most of the time I use Facebook and Twitter to maintain relationships with communities. In my way, usually I do not add or follow people who I do not know in person in real life. But when discus about the profession part, I use those two social media platforms to show my professional activities such as my Podcast, my songs, my photography works to people.

These can be recognized as my public activities. It means these the activities that I do to create my public online identities. In this way I only share my very limited information with online community.

But when I use my social media accounts for my personal purposes such as chatting with my friends, share my photos, share my reason activities and other things that I do for my fun, I keep them very personal and they are only visible to selected people. As an example, when I am composing a song I only that movement with my friends who also involve with music.

Twitter is one of my favorite social media platform. In my experience, Twitter is the best way to do micro-blog ( Albarran , 2013, p.21) and involve with online communities. Twitter found on March 2006 ( Albarran , 2013, p.21) and it is a very successful social media platform.

Usually I use Twitter to get to know about other people’s opinions and ideas, when I am empty or idea-less. Also, I use Twitter to know answers to my day to day question in my profession and university works. As an example, when I do not know something about Adobe Photoshop, I used to tweet it and get answers from people who sharing their knowledge. And, if I see a tweet about something that I really know, I will never ignore that. With these activities, I get to know new people with same passion as me. But as I mention above, I do not add people to my personal account until I get to them know.

When we about to keep relationships with unknown people in social media, it is so hard to be aware from negative activities such as cyber bullying and cyber racism (Rice, Haynes, Royce and Thompson , 2016, p.12). So, my advice is be more careful when you choose people to add in social media. Otherwise it is going to be very uncomfortable social experience for you.

When sharing your personal details in social media, you should be very careful about what you should share and what you should not. I do not prefer to share every movement in my day to day life in social media as usual people do. It is so important to decide and think what you actually need to share/ show up with people. As my personal opinion, it is not a good idea to chat unimportant things with people, through the social media platforms, by wasting our time. It is good to discus something important. Something important to your career, your education or it can be a personal importance. But what ever you do, the way you maintaining relationships/ communications  through social media is directly affect to state of your online identity.

While we maintain relationships, it is very important to respect others. It is not good practice to use bad things in social media that make other people hurt. Usually what I do is, before I start to keep in tough with a person, I do a self-research on his/ her twitter account, to find what kind of person is he/ she. It is so easy to find the type of person by looking at their account. Search for what have they have share, what have they tweet, what kind of photos or videos they have on their account and any other things that can be find on the account. With these information it is possible to get a rough idea on what kind of person is this and we can communicate with them, by using most comfortable method for them.

This is how I maintain relationships on my social media. Hope you get some new ideas on this subject. Make sure to drop your ideas as comments.
